FAQ's for Philips/ CAH SpO2 Sensors

1. Are Philips / CAH sensors compatible with Masimo Monitors?
No. Masimo’s socket is a ‘closed’ socket which does not allow for sensor connectivity beyond their sensor lines. A closed socket is one in which other manufacturer’s sensors do not connect to.

2. Are Philips / CAH sensors compatible with Nellcor Monitors?
·Maybe. Most Nellcor sockets are ‘closed’ sockets. A closed socket is one in which other manufacturer’s sensors do not connect to.
·Philips has validated their sensors on a few of Nellcor’s monitors. These monitors are the Nellcor N200, N3000, N395, N-20 PA, NPB-40. The M1943A or M1943AL adaptor cable is required to connect the Philips’/ CAH sensors.

3. Do Nellcor and Masimo sensors connect to the Philips FAST algorithm?
·Yes. The Philips FAST socket is an ‘open’ socket. An ‘open’ socket is one in which other manufacturer’s sensors DO connect to. Most Masimo and Nellcor sensors connect to the Philips FAST algorithm.
· The Masimo Rainbow sensors are not compatible with the Philips FAST algorithm.
· The remaining sensors in the Masimo portfolio are compatible with the Philips’ FAST algorithm. There are 2 different types of Masimo SET sensors:
1. Masimo LNCS sensors. These sensors require the 9898031 48221 adaptor cable to connect the LNCS sensors to the Philips’ FAST socket.
2. Masimo LNOP sensors. These sensors require the M1020-61100 adaptor cable to connect the LNOP sensors to the Philips’ FAST socket.

· The Nellcor Softcare and MaxFast sensors are not compatible with the Philips FAST algorithm. These are the only Nellcor sensors that are not compatible with the Philips’ FAST algorithm.
· The remaining sensors in the Nellcor portfolio are compatible with the Philips’ FAST algorithm. In order to connect the Nellcor Oximax sensors to the Philips’ FAST socket, an adaptor cable is required. The necessary adaptor cable is the M1943A (1.1m long) or the M1943AL (3m long).

4. Can Philips / CAH single-patient-use sensors be used on the same patient for multiple days?
· Yes. Philips’ sensors have been tested to last the ‘average patient stay’ or up to 6 days. You can use 1 sensor for an entire patient stay to control cost-per-patient-day. Our competitor’s sensor typically last only 2-3 days.

5. Do Philips / CAH sensors require an adaptor cable?
· Yes. Both Philips / CAH single-patient and reusable SpO2 sensors connect to the Philips A01 monitor technology via an adaptor cable.
· The required adaptor cable for the Philips / CAH SpO2 sensors is the M1943A. The M1943A is 1 meters long. And there is a longer version of this cable, M1943AL. The “L” stands for “long”. The M1943AL is 3 meters long.

Tax Credit for Electronic Health Records

I know I stress on this a bunch, but Electronic Health Records are not going away. You have one month to get up an running on an E.H.R. and be qualified for a tax credit for 2009. As we get ready to do our taxes, you always look for things you can deduct, right? Well, E.H.R. along with medical equipment, are great opportunities for deduction!

I am not a tax professional, so I will insist that you go talk with yours, but here are some key points to know if you will qualify for the tax credit.

Taxpayers may purchase up to $800,000 of qualifying equipment each tax year before the write-off is reduced dollar for dollar. Property
included in the 179 deduction:

• Tangible property depreciated under MACRS with a recovery period of 20 years or less
• Computer software (depreciated under Section 167(f )(1))
• Qualified leasehold improvement property (defined in Section 168(k)(3))
The equipment should be acquired by purchase for use in active conduct of a trade or business

Reflection...

I love Thanksgiving because it gives us a time to reflect and look back on all the things/people we are grateful for. This may get a little cheesy or sentimental, but humor me!

I am grateful that I have a job where I can interact with intellegent people who have a heart for helping others feel better. OK, so maybe this is a push, I mean the intellegent people--Just kidding--you are all very smart and great at what you do!

I am also thankful for my wonderful family and friends who support me in all areas of my life. Isn't it great to have folks stand behind you as your cheerleader! I think it is important to have cheerleaders, but more importantly, you need to be a cheerleader for others as well!

Ok, so as your sales consultant at Cardinal, I just want you to know that I do appreciate your business and do not take it for granted! I know you have a choice and I am glad you choose me and continue to choose me! Please remember, the only way I can be the Best out there is by you being honest with me!

Have a wonderful Holiday Season and God Bless!

H1N1 Vaccine Update

From the LA Times...

"The Health and Human Services secretary says the U.S. is too dependent on foreign countries for production of vaccines, as shown by delays in the release of H1N1 flu shots."

"Officials had originally projected that 40 million doses of the vaccine would be available by the end of October, but because of what Sebelius called "glitches" in manufacturing, just 11 million doses have been made available. Officials estimate that 28 million to 30 million doses will be available by the end of the month."

Keep in mind that Cardinal can help with the prevention of spreading the influenza, whether H1N1 or the regular flu. Keep us in mind for Masks, Sani Wipes, Gloves, Sanitizers, Flu Kits & Much More!

Best AntiSeptic to Use...

Not prepping the skin properly can be a recipe for disaster! So why take a chance on a product you are not completely confident in.

One that I am confident in and many other medical professionals use is Chloraprep!

Chloraprep provides two distinct mechanisms of action: 1) IPA rapidly kills microorganisms by denaturing cell proteins 2) CHG maintains persistent antimicrobial activity by disrupting the cell membrane and precipitating cell contents

So what does that mean for you?
1)Low Irritation
2)Remains active in the presence of blood, serum, etc.
3)Effective against MRSA, VRE, etc
4)Maintains antimicrobial activity for at least 48 hours
5)No Iodine--2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG) and 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)

Many to choose from...
Sepp, Frepp, Swabstick, 3mL, 10.5mL, 26mL

A1C...Doing them?

Do you treat patients who are diabetic? If so, then you either already have a Seimen's DCA A1C Analyzer or should consider one.

If you have a DCA 2000, you should know that Seimens is replacing that one with their DCA Vantage. To do so, we just need to fill out some paperwork to get you upgraded. Ask me for the details.

If you are not currently using a DCA Vantage tests for A1Cs, then you may want to consider this CLIA waived analyzer. It is interfacable with EMRs, has an onboard printer and a color screen. Below is a link to see more about the DCA Vantage and all it can do for you. Ask me to do a ROI (return on your investment) to see if it is worth bringing in-house!

Do you treat Diabetics?

I have noticed the rise in diabetics and you probably have too. One site I looked at said over 150 million people in the world today are affected by Diabetes. This makes me sad to hear that many people are dealing with diabetes, so it is up to us to help educate and treat those around us.

Right now, Cardinal has put together promotions and a focus on diabetes! It is our desire to help you be aware of what is out there to help you treat and diagnose those who may be affected. Please check out my blog this week for product information and promotions we have going on!

Why Now...

Many folks are nervous, scared or just not up to implementing an EHR in their practice. Yes, it does take extra time to learn how the system works as well as scanning documents, but talk to those who have already done it and they say it was SO WORTH IT!

* Make sure you are up and running for the stimulus money
* Make your practice more Efficient--Your Patients will Thank You!
* Better Patient Care--I know this phrase seems overdone, but very applicable

Why Wait 'Till Tomorrow When You Can Do It Today!

A Little Math Break...

If you take any number, double it, add 10, divide by 2, and subtract your original number, the answer will always be 5.

Try it and it is pretty cool! This is a good one to share with the family!

Another fun fact:

On average women speak 7000 words per day, where as men speak just over 2000

This is good to know--by the time my husband comes home he is out of words and I am just getting started!

I am not trying to make you feel bad, I just want to make sure I do my job and keep you informed on what we have out there to help you do your job that much better. You have a lot on your plate and if I can save you time and put money back in your pocket--I think that is a pretty good partnership!

So When Should You Use Albumin Testing?
If you think your patient has symptoms of a liver disorder or kidney disease, if they have a recent, rapid weight change, or prior to a planned surgery.

So What Do I have to Help You?
Hemocue has a CLIA Waived Point-of-Care test that is lab-accurate and you get quantitative results in about 90 minutes (urine test). Check out the following Promotions to make this a No-Brainer!

Are you Doing or Sending Out Wet Preps...

The World Health Organization recognizes Trichomoniasis as the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world and accounts for more than 50% of all new cases of curable infections among adults worldwide.

So what are you doing to help those who may have Trich or BV (pH & Amines test)? You are probably doing wet preps or sending them out to a reference lab. What if you could do a test right in the office and have an answer and treatment ready before your patient leaves the office!

Too many physcians either do not know that these tests are avialable or forget about them! Now you do not have any excuses because of this article!

Genzyme offers both tests and they are CLIA Waived! Below you will see Cardinal's material numbers along with the CPT codes.

B1049-183 BV BLUE 25 tests/kit CPT 87905QW $5.13-$17.84

Until the end of September you can take advantage of this Promotion with Osom and Me!

Pink Eye...

It is inevitable that little ones as well as some adults get pink eye or conjunctivitis. Wouldn't you like a test that will tell you if it is a baterial or viral? Of course you would! Well, now we have a test that help you do that!

I know being a new mom, I would greatly appreciate my pediatrician using such a test so I wouldn't be sent home with antibiotics that didn't work. Now, I am not one of those "over-the-top" kind of moms, but I am sure you have met them and know that if you had this test how much better it would have made your life!

I am poking a little fun, but on a serious note, think of how much more credibility you would have as a medical professional if you could provide your patients with quality tests like this one. If you are interested in this test, please look below for the information you will need to order it!

Let's Talk Lab

Whether you are a Physcian Office, Surgery Center or another speciality, lab is apart of your everyday tasks! Lab can be a scary word, but it shouldn't be! You may think, oh, I have to buy expensive equipment, hire a lab tech and pay tons of money to get a license to do so---BUT that is not all true!

Did you know that being CLIA Waived you can do almost all the tests you normally send out! That is right! Many of the instruments/analyzers out there offer not only CLIA Waived tests but also are EMR compatable.

Did I mention there is a Money Revenue piece to Lab...

If you are interested in what kind of lab you can do, let's get together and look at what you send out and see if it is WORTH your time to bring Lab In-House!

Just a side note, I highly dislike having to go get my blood drawn at a Reference lab, when my Doctor should be doing it in-house! It is just silly to me and it makes me really evaluate why I use his/her services! Do you think your patients feel this way?

It is Never to Early to think about Tax Deduct!ions

The provisions of Internal Revenue Code Section 179 allow a sole proprietor, partnership or corporation to fully expense tangible property in the year it is purchased. And tax-law changes have made this option much more appealing by dramatically increasing the amount that can be written off immediately. [taken from Reperitore Magazine]
What is an example of something you can deduct? Exam Tables & Capital Lab Equipment
Let's take a look at what would work best for your practice. Whether it is a new exam table or adding some lab testing to your practice, I want to help you make the right investment!
Who ever knew I could help you out with your Taxes! Just don't ask me to do your Taxes :)!

Did You Know...

Sometimes we forget that Cardinal has a lot to offer. Ok, that sounded kind of salesy, but it really is true. We can not only provide you with your disposables, but we also have medical equipment and lab equipment. These two categories can help your practice in more ways than one. Let me share a few of those helpful ways:

1. Better Patient Care--with newer equipment, you will have the latest technology as well as provide a added value to your patients when you can do in-house lab for example!

2. Possible Tax Benefits--with new equipment, you may qualify for tax write-offs. I would suggest talking with your accountant for further details, but for example, adding new Barrier-Free Midmark Tables (http://www.midmark.com/Pages/Product.aspx?iProductID=9&iHierarchyID=31&cat=powerexaminationtables ), it is a win-win! Ask me how!!!

3. Efficiency--Wow, that is a word we all like to hear. How great is it when we can be more efficient. I usually can sleep better at night when I know I accomplished my full To Do list for the day! To do this, give me an opportunity to observe or talk thru your processes of daily duties, such as lab, pulling for cases, etc. I may be able to help find ways to Reduce Inventory and/or Reduce Costs.

Remember, I am here to help you out! I am not going to sell you something you DO NOT Need, but products you DO Need! Let's work together and grow your practice!

Update on the Swine Influenza (Flu)

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

CDC's goals during this public health emergency are to reduce transmission and illness severity, and provide information to assist health care providers, public health officials and the public in addressing the challenges posed by this newly identified influenza virus. To this end, CDC has issued a number of interim guidance documents in the past 24 hours. In addition, CDC's Division of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) is releasing one-quarter of its antiviral drugs, personal protective equipment, and respiratory protection devices to help states respond to the outbreak. Laboratory testing has found the swine influenza A (H1N1) virus susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir. This is a rapidly evolving situation and CDC will provide updated guidance and new information as it becomes available.

How to Not Participate in this Recession...

Looking at your practice in a different light can help increase business and the $$$! Let me help you by taking a look at your patient mix.

A physician might want to shift his or her case mix toward more:
High reimbursement cases
Cash cases
Niche markets, specialty cases, challenges that appeal to the physician

Here are some questions to ask yourself:
1. What are the elective care and/or fee-for-service opportunities in your practice?
2. What equipment/procedures have the highest earning power (lowest physician time vs. compensation rate)?
3. Are there cases which fit within the practice’s purview that can easily be delegated to staff, thus leveraging the doctors’ time?

I can help you talk through some of these options that are available. Remember, let's not participate in this recession!
